7 coffee blends, 7 charitable causes

Original: 7 coffee blends, 7 charitable causes

Given that some 350,000,000 cups of coffee are consumed each day in the United States alone, it's not too surprising to see social entrepreneurs tapping into that consumption for charitable good. In August we featured Newhall Coffee's custom blends for nonprofit fundraisers, and just recently we came across Project7, which donates to a different cause when it sells each of its seven blends.

Texas-based Project7's coffees are all harvested from small, organic farms that are certified Fair Trade and USDA Organic. Sold through coffee-of-the-month subscriptions, each coffee blend is attached to a specific cause. Its French Roast coffee, for instance, is associated with its "Heal the Sick" project, so that each canister sold translates into medicine provided for one person suffering from malaria. Its Nicaragua Hacienda coffee, on the other hand, is linked with its "Feed the Hungry" project; each canister sale provides seven meals in American communities. Other charitable projects supported by the organization include supplying clean water to those in need, planting fruit trees, housing orphans, educating African children and providing counseling for children of war. Project7's coffee subscriptions are available in increments of three, six or 12 months, with monthly pricing of USD 45, USD 40 and USD 35, respectively.

Combining the increasingly ubiquitous subscription model with a heaping helping of corporate generosity, Project7's effort is sure to please countless coffee-loving members of Generation G. Which causes will *your* generous brand link with sales in its own product line...?

Distribution is a key to every product's success, but for some it requires a little more creative thinking than others. Take locally grown produce. Rather than expect consumers to seek it out at farm stands and other select venues, we've already seen one effort that brings it to commuters with specially priced USD 5 bags, for example. Delivery by bicycle is another approach, as we've seen in Florida, and recently one of our spotters alerted us to a similar initiative in Minnesota.

Minneapolis-based VeloVeggies aims to make it easier for consumers to put farm-fresh fruits and vegetables on the table. Toward that end, it delivers produce and specially assorted boxes of veggies to consumers' door. Community-supported agriculture (CSA) participants can have their shares of produce delivered by VeloVeggies, which will also pick up consumers' compostable waste for delivery to its partner community gardens and vermiculture processor; as with Compost Cab, participants are also entitled to a portion of the resulting soil and worm castings in return. Perhaps most interesting of all, though, is VeloVeggies' VegBox, which features a selection of fresh, locally grown vegetables and fruits from the Twin Cities farmers' markets. During the growing season, VeloVeggies packs its VegBoxes fre

The delivery of fresh food has always been fraught with challenges, of course, but it seems to be dovetailing beautifully with the current urban bicycle revolution. Time to start "pedaling" some produce for delivery through the city streets near you...? The subscription model seems to be spreading like wildfire! Hardly a week goes by without our spotting at least one new subscription-based business, and this week was no exception. The concept this time around? Artisan lip balm, with a new one sent to the consumer's door each month.

UK-based Bonbon sells a wide variety of attractively packaged lip balms made using only natural ingredients such as shea butter and plant oils; where possible, it chooses organic and fair-trade ingredients. What's particularly interesting about the company, however, is that rather than sell its 3.5g lip balms individually online or through brick-and-mortar stores, it has chosen to offer them up by monthly subscription only. For GBP 5 per month, the company will send consumers a new flavoured lip balm 12 times a year; with flavours like caramel and mojito, its current line features limited-edition jar labels created by designer Jack Featherstone.

Bonbon currently delivers only within Europe, where shipping is free. One to partner with or emulate for lip balm fans in other parts of the world...? Crowdsourcing has already proven a highly effective way to innovate new solutions to a variety of problems, as we've seen on numerous occasions. Sustainability, not surprisingly, is an oft-targeted problem among those examples — the Globe Forum, for instance, focuses squarely on that one — and recently we came across another: Myoo Create.

Now in beta, UK-based Myoo Create ("Myoo" is short for "me" and "you") aims to help organizations put the crowds to work solving environmental and social challenges. Organizations begin by signing up with the site and posting a challenge they'd like to see solved; they also offer a specific prize for the best solution. The Myoo Create community then brainstorms and submits solutions to the challenge, which then become available for evaluation, voting and feedback from other participants on the site. The process varies with each contest, but generally there's one prize for the crowd favourite, while the ultimate winner is selected with the input of expert judges. Organizations involved so far include Levi Strauss & Co. and National Geographic.

Incubated by Adventure Ecology, Myoo Create is a for-profit enterprise that earns revenue from consulting and by charging a fee from organizations that post challenges. Community participation, on the other hand, is free. Eventually, Myoo aims to allow community members to post challenges as well through a "do-it-yourself" service. Luxury hotels for dogs aren't a new concept, but we recently came across one in Portland with a twist that we couldn't resist sharing. Not only does the Sniff Dog Hotel offer high-end accommodations, grooming, training and daycare, but it also includes a café where dog-loving humans can hang out and watch their canine companions play for free.

With daily rates beginning at USD 37 for a 16-square-foot room, the Sniff Dog Hotel's accommodations feature elevated beds with fleece bedding, multihour play sessions and complimentary baths after a four-night stay. Climate-controlled suites of larger sizes are also available, many offering natural lighting and views of the city. All hotel guests are monitored 24/7, and an indoor play park — used for daycare as well — features dirt-free K9 grass and custom playmate-matching based on temperament. Grooming, spa services and massage therapy are also available, but the best part in our view is the Sniff Café, serving local beer, wine, coffee, pastries, sandwiches, pizza and more. During the café's Happy Hour from 5 to 7pm Monday through Saturday, human patrons can let their dogs romp for free in Sniff Dog's indoor park while they enjoy reduced beverage prices along with the café's flat-screen TVs, free wifi and outdoor seating.

Still not sure pets and their owners represent a compelling market? Then just pause for a moment to consider the USD 47.7 billion US consumers alone are expected to spend on their pets this year. Next, check out some of our other pet-related coverage. Much the way the wearable Vicon Revue takes digital photos throughout the day as a means of recording the wearer's life, so the Looxcie records continuous video for a similar purpose.

Launched last month by a California company with the same name, the Looxcie (pronounced "look-see") is a wearable Bluetooth camcorder that lets users capture video of everything they see. The device fits comfortably over the ear, the company says, and points wherever the wearer looks. It's always on, so the user needn't worry about turning it on when they want to record. When something memorable happens, though, they simply press a button to save a permanent, sharable clip of the last 30 seconds. Otherwise, Looxcie continuously purges the oldest video in its storage, which can accommodate up to five hours of recording. An accompanying smartphone application, meanwhile, turns the user's phone into a Looxcie viewfinder, remote control and editing tool for creating clips up to 30 minutes in length. Clips can also be uploaded to a Mac or PC via the device's USB connector for archiving, viewing, editing or additional sharing; a pre-programmable auto-share feature lets users automatic

Writing platform facilitates collaboration from any device

Original: Writing platform facilitates collaboration from any device

There's no doubt the content-producing masses like to collaborate, and technology is helping that happen in more ways than ever before. Much the way WEbook helps writers collaborate, Songza lets music fans create shared radio stations and even London's Royal Opera House has undertaken a crowdsourcing effort via Twitter, so ThumbScribes enables the collaborative creation of virtually any kind of content from just about every type of device.

Inspired by chain novels and the 1900s parlour game Exquisite Corpse, New York-based ThumbScribes is a platform for creating collaborative content. Participants on the site, which is now in beta, begin by signing up and then either creating a new "scribe" — or piece of content — or joining in on one already started. Haiku, poems, short stories, flash fiction, novellas and songs can all be created asynchronously or in real time on the platform using computers, tablets, cell phones, IM and Twitter. Scribes get passed back and forth among ThumbScribes authors, who add new chapters or sections to the work until it's completed. They can be kept private and limited to a select set of authors, or they can be opened up to the world. Once a piece of content is completed, it can be published on the site and open to visitors' votes.

Will the crowds ever stop creating and collaborating? Never. And will brands ever stop recruiting them for new content? Certainly not. Facilitate the process, and you just may find yourself sitting happily in the middle ;-)

Supermarkets and health food stores offer a growing variety of meat substitutes, aimed at vegans, vegetarians, flexitarians and everyone else who has decided to eat less meat. What we hadn't yet spotted, however, was a store dedicated to meat substitutes in the same way a butcher is dedicated to meat. Filling that gap is De Vegetarische Slager — the vegetarian butcher — which will be opening its doors in The Hague on Monday.

In addition to selling existing meat substitutes, De Vegetarische Slager's main innovation is its own line of lupin-based products. Protein-rich lupin seeds, also known as lupin beans, were common fare for the Romans. The plant's popularity as a source of human food fell by the wayside, and until soy came along, it was used to feed livestock. Now, a Dutch lupin grower — eighth generation farmer Jaap Korteweg — aims to bring lupin back into the kitchen as a sustainable alternative to eating animals.

The process of turning lupin seeds into edible protein was developed by a company in Wageningen. Korteweg, meanwhile, partnered with chef Marco Westmaas to create a culinary range of lupin and soy-based products that he'll be selling from his new 'butcher's shop'. De Vegetarische Slager hopes to appeal to foodies, and is targeting the higher end of the market — consumers willing to pay as much for a meat substitute as they would for the real thing. As more people opt for meatless Mondays or cut out meat altogether, we wouldn't be surprised to see vegetarian butchers pop up on main streets around the world.

The Million-Dollar Idea in Everyone: Easy New Ways to Make Money from Your Interests, Insights, and Inventions

Companies have long recognized that bloggers and other influencers in social media can be a highly effective target for marketing efforts. It's finding the right social influencers that's always been the trick, and that's where Klout comes in. The San Francisco company has devised a metric that captures in a single number an individual's influence on Twitter.

Ranging from 0 to 100, the Klout Score represents any individual's overall Twitter clout, with higher scores indicating a wider and stronger sphere of influence. More than 25 variables go into that score, inlcuding the number of engaged followers as opposed to spam bots and dead accounts, the likelihood that the person's messages will generate retweets or spark a conversation, and how influential the person's followers are. Scores on those variables are then run through Klout's analytics engine, which creates a composite score representing how successful a person is at engaging their audience and how big an impact their messages have on others. Soon to come from Klout is the inclusion of Facebook data as well as, potentially, information from LinkedIn, MySpace, Digg and even YouTube, AdAge reported.

For brands, the Klout score can be used to find influencers by topic or hashtag and connect with them directly through the Klout Perks program; in a current example, Klout is giving away free tickets to select influencers to try a new Virgin America Toronto route. For applications, meanwhile, the Klout API provides the ability to sort incoming messages based on the sender's Klout score, for instance, as well as to use it for social search, CRM and lead generation. Starbucks, Cover Girl and Dannon Yogurt have already put Klout to work, as have Fox and the Palms Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, according to AdAge. "Throwing free samples to a whole bunch of poorly targeted bloggers has serious limits," Klout global sales head Garth Holsinger told the publication. "The individuals we engage are identified because they've worked hard to establish a credible voice on subjects that matter to them." Time to put Klout to work for your application or brand...? Students pay by phone for bike-sharing on campus

Original: Students pay by phone for bike-sharing on campus

College campuses are a natural fit for ride-sharing programs, as Zipcar and Zimride have already shown. So it makes perfect sense to see UK-based WhipBikes launch a bike-sharing program targeting a similar audience.

Inspired by the bike-sharing programs that are becoming common in many cities, WhipBikes is a self-service sharing system that's now available at Newcastle University. Faculty and students begin by paying a one-time GBP 14.95 registration fee to sign up with the service. From there on, they're eligible to use a WhipBike whenever they need one, choosing from the 150 or so bikes scattered all across campus. When they want to rent one, users simply pick a bike and text its bike number to WhipBikes, which will reply with the lock code for that bike. The user then has 30 minutes to ride wherever he or she needs to go and then relock the bike at the nearest WhipBikes rack. The cost of 50p per ride is simply added to the user's mobile phone bill. WhipBikes also accepts advertising for display on the rear wheel cover of its bikes; pricing is GBP 35 for two weeks.

With a solution that not only saves young transumers from having to purchase a bike of their own but also enables advertisers to reach tens of thousands of students throughout the course of the day, WhipBikes is ripe for partnership or emulation on college campuses around the globe. It's always inspiring to see an entrepreneur hit upon an idea that solves two problems at once. Case in point: New York-based Solve Media. Combining websites' need for user authentication with advertisers' ongoing need for consumer attention, the company has launched a captcha-style tool that addresses both ends.

Service delivers flattery by phone, on demand

Original: Service delivers flattery by phone, on demand

Imitation may be the sincerest form of flattery, but there's no doubt a few well-placed compliments can work wonders too. Where Pink Kisses delivers flattery by text message to help restore a newly single woman's post-breakup confidence, Flatter Me is a more general service that offers phone calls full of praise for any occasion.

For just USD 5, consumers can hire Flatter Me to call any friend or relation in North America and deliver a load of compliments. They can either customize the message themselves, or they can leave the compliments up to the Canadian firm. Calls are typically short and sweet, lasting between 30 seconds and one minute; common occasions for using the service include employee motivation, encouragement, birthday wishes and appreciation. A USD 10 package includes one call each week for a month.

Ever hear the expression, "Flattery will get you everywhere"? We're betting that it's absolutely right! ;-) (Related: Service for sports fans aims to rub in the team rivalryNagging service for dieters.)

The Million-Dollar Idea in Everyone: Easy New Ways to Make Money from Your Interests, Insights, and Inventions

Matchmaking, if you think about it, is at the heart of so many business transactions. Buyer meets seller; volunteer meets nonprofit; investor meets worthy startup. It's not too surprising, then, to see a matchmaking service target potential business cofounders, with the aim of helping them hook up. That, indeed, is just the purpose of UK-based MatchFounders.

Launched recently at Launch48 — with advice, incidentally, from a Lovestruck mentor — MatchFounders aims to create "matched introductions between passionate people with different skill sets, creating lasting and fruitful professional relationships," in the site's own words. Visitors to the site can search for potential matches based on a potential partner's desired expertise, funding preferences and commitment.

Now apparently in beta, MatchFounders is still busy getting off the ground. Its potential, however, is very compelling. One to get involved in early — or to use to find your own match made in heaven? ;-) (Related: Matchmaking site for platonic friendshipsPeer-to-peer recruiting, with prizes for referrals.)

Limited-edition art by yearly subscription

Original: Limited-edition art by yearly subscription

Regular Springwise readers may recall The Thing, the unconventional magazine we covered back in 2007 in which each issue is literally a different work of art. Operating on much the same premise, California-based Alula offers a yearly subscription service that buys quarterly pieces of limited-edition textile art.

Launched this summer with support from Southern Exposure, Alula Editions has already sent out its first work of art, which was a handkerchief and reversible tie created by artist Jason Jägel. Hand silkscreening and sewing were done by Alula Editions in the Bay Area using sustainable fabrics and water-based inks. Alula's Fall edition will feature a creation from the Headlands Center for the Arts, while Allison Smith and Sara Magenheimer are slated for its Winter and Spring 2011 editions, respectively. All pieces are signed and numbered; pricing for a yearly subscription is USD 200.

Curated subscription models are becoming increasingly common, for everything from luxury women's panties to handmade greeting cards, but curation's appeal is particularly strong for products like art, where consumers will likely value expert guidance even more. Artists, of course, gain from the increased exposure and revenue. Let all those in the art world take note! ;-) (Related: High-end beauty samples by curated subscription
