A casket minus a cadaver yielded nearly 100 pounds of marijuana after a traffic stop in Dallas. William Dale Crock of Cave City, Ark., was in jail Friday on a marijuana possession charge, plus traffic and seat beat violations. Dallas police say Crock was arrested Wednesday when bundles of marijuana were discovered under the casket's cover and pillow.

Sr. Cpl. Kevin Janse (JAN'-see) told said the van turned up during surveillance on a suspected drug house. Police stopped the van in Mesquite, after noticing Crock not wearing a seat belt. Officers also said he allegedly ran a red light and did an improper lane change.

A drug-sniffing dog alerted officers to the casket in the van.

Magazine produced in 24 hours

Original: Magazine produced in 24 hours

Hard on the heels of our coverage of Kult—the vintage-arcade-machine-turned-3D-magazine—comes word of another paradigm-busting publication. Rather than breaking the mold on its form, however, this one shatters the norm by virtue of the fact that it was created and produced in 24 hours.

The clock began at 3 pm Central European time on June 27, when an all-volunteer team of designers, photographers, writers and others began to work nonstop on 24Hour Magazine, beginning from scratch with no design and no content. Twenty-four hours later—at 3 pm on June 28—the magazine was ready for the printing press, featuring articles, photos and illustrations on topics including lifestyle, fashion, music and design. The point was not just to create a product, however. Rather, the concept focused heavily on the experience of the process as well. With that in mind, the Kortrijk, Belgium-based team meticulously shared the day's experience with the world through a variety of social media and other online avenues, including live video feeds, No word yet on a next issue—or, indeed, on reactions to the magazine-cum-experience—but in the meantime, 24Hour Mag is actively seeking sponsors and advertisers. When consumers get cold feet, what's an entrepreneur to do? Sell them footed pajamas: a grown-up version of Dr. Denton's kiddie sleepwear.

Four years ago Valerie Johnson started Big Feet Pajama Co. from the basement of her Las Vegas home. The former stockbroker, who says she can't even sew a straight seam, sold $360,000 worth of pajamas in 2005; revenues hit $2 million in 2008. Despite the recession, she expects to top $2.5 million this year, thanks to strong advance orders for next winter's holiday season.

"Fleece and flannel mean comfort and security," she says. "My pajamas are a small, practical indulgence when all the fun has been squeezed out of t staff slumber party.

"People want to wear what Eva Longoria is wearing," Johnson says cheerfully. "Especially if they can get it for just $44."

Digital publisher Zinio has teamed up with Starwood to offer guests free digital copies of their favourite magazines. As of last month, a variety of well-known titles can be downloaded at Starwood's Element hotels, with Aloft and Four Points by Sheraton joining at the end of the year.

Zinio's 'digital newsstand' can be accessed on guests' laptops in their rooms, or via a kiosk in the lobby. After logging on to the Starwood portal and registering with Zinio, guests can select as many single titles as they wish, choosing from a wide range of popular publications like Caribbean Travel & Life, Destination Weddings & Honeymoons, Field & Stream and Ski Magazine. (Prices for magazines purchased through Zinio are normally similar to those paid for paper copies.)

With editions that can be read online or off—and that are identical to their printed brethren—travellers are freed from schlepping around a bag full of paper. Zinio gets the chance to demo its service to new users, and Starwood can offer its guests magazines they actually want to read, instead of a standard selection. And there's an environmental benefit too, of course, which is fitting since Element is Starwood's new 'green' brand. Reminds us of another download service for travellers we spotted recently: airline alliance offers free audiobook downloads at airports.

We've written fairly extensively about city bike schemes already, and Barcelona's two-year-old Bicing is a shining example. Now, bringing the service into the iPhone era, Bicing recently launched a mobile application that consumers can use to get location-based information about bicycle and parking availability.

Residents of Barcelona use Bicing by applying for a personal card and then using that card to rent and pay for use of one of the service's 6,000 bicycles. Bicycles can be picked up from and returned to any of 400 stations throughout the city. With the new iBicing application—downloadable from Apple's iTunes Store for EUR 0.79—consumers can now see in advance the best place to find or bring back a bicycle. All they need do is send an SMS to "7010" for information about the availability of bikes and parking slots at the stations nearest them. iBicing taps the iPhone's GPS capabilities to pinpoint a user's location and select which stations would be most convenient, but users can also search for information about others. Google Maps with interactive navigation can be displayed as well.

Bike sharing schemes are already laudable for so many reasons, most notably their benefits for the environment and urban congestion. Making such services more convenient for consumers through maps and the increasingly ubiquitous iPhone is the obvious next step toward realizing those benefits more fully. This is "mapmania" at work, as our sister site would say, and it's one to emulate in bicycle-sharing cities around the globe! Steps To Social Media

So social media (Facebook, Twitter, and blogging, for example) is fun; but is it business? If you're wondering, then it's about time to take a step back, breathe deeply, and revisit the fundamentals.

While many social media applications are fun and handy for just about everything, not all of them fit for business. Below are a few steps you can take in your business to reach social media.

Make sure you have a review schedule before you even do any sort of business planning. Set up a specific day where you review once a month to see what your progress is, as suggested on OpenForum. Think through your business plan that you are about to put into motion, and then set up some steps on how to get there. This does not mean you always have to follow them, but it is nice to have steps towards your ending goal.

When all is said and done and put into perspective, execute your plan. No business plan ever goes exactly as you write it, you will always have to do some  reviewing, correcting and steering in possibly different directions. But without a business plan, you would never even know where to at least start or where you at least want to end up.

Streamlined shopping for household goods, straight from manufacturers

Original: Streamlined shopping for household goods, straight from manufacturers

Laundry detergent, toilet paper and toothpaste are not items consumers typically buy online, as the grocery stores, Wal-Marts and big box outlets of the world can attest. A new e-commerce site aims to change all that, however, by providing free shipping, streamlined reordering and a platform that allows consumers and manufacturers to connect.

Just launched into beta this week, Alice offers more than 6,000 unique products from hundreds of different manufacturers. Its prices are 20 percent to 30 percent lower than those at other online stores, it says, and shipping is always free. US consumers begin by creating a free account and then selecting a list of all their favourite products, ordering only the items they need right then. Each shipment is bundled together in a single "Alice" box and delivered directly to the consumer's door. Meanwhile, Alice organizes all the products on the member's list, finds coupons and deals for them, and reminds them to reorder when they are likely to be running low.

Although Wisconsin-based Alice works much like any other online retailer from the consumer's perspective, behind the scenes it is more like a marketplace, allowing manufacturers to sell directly to US consumers. Alice makes no retail margin, and instead allows each manufacturer to control product assortment and pricing in its own direct sale to the end consumer. Because no retail middleman is involved, significant cost savings can be passed on to shoppers, the company says. In addition, Alice's model allows brands to form a direct relationship with consumers, enabling personalized coupons, sampling and loyalty programs.

Alice is actively signing up manufacturers during its beta phase, with plans for a full consumer launch in the fall. Those in consumer packaged goods: better get on board now! For all others: One to help bring to consumers in the rest of the shop-weary world?

Our coverage of ad-supported FreePaperCups earlier this year sparked quite a reaction from eco-minded readers, many of whom very rightly pointed out the wastefulness inherent in using disposable cups. We're happy, then, to present the KeepCup, a sustainable, reusable alternative designed to reduce the massive waste created when coffee cups are meant to be thrown away.

The average paper cup consumes 2.5 times its final weight in raw wood, and is also coated in a polyethylene lining that makes it not just waterproof but also unrecyclable. Similar in intent to I Am Not a Paper Cup, the KeepCup is a lightweight, reusable and recyclable cup crafted from polypropylene—otherwise known as No. 5 food-grade plastic. Two sizes are currently available—a small, 8oz. size and a medium, 12oz. version—with both a large, 16oz. size and a "Babycino" 4oz. size on the way. Particularly notable is that Australian KeepCup replicates standard sizing on disposable coffee cups commonly used by baristas, so it can be substituted for paper cups without any modification; the small and medium cups fit directly under the nozzle at the coffee machine. Cups, lids, plugs and silicone bands can also be mixed and matched to create colourful combinations, and

KeepCup is currently seeking "crusaders" to manage and distribute its cups in overseas markets. Given that Australians alone use some 500 million disposable cups each year—throwing out 951 every minute—there's sure to be considerable opportunity in virtually every neck of the woods. One to get in on early! ;-)

Vintage arcade machine as touring 3D magazine

Original: Vintage arcade machine as touring 3D magazine

When Singapore creative agency Kult launched a self-titled art magazine earlier this month, it didn't just produce print and online editions, as most publishers might. Rather, the group also created a touring, 3D version of the magazine crafted out of a vintage arcade machine.

With a premier issue focused on the theme of "trust," Kult Magazine aims to visualize its topics through the work of young artists from Asia and around the world. Emphasizing photography, illustration, graphic design and other visual arts, Kult hopes to use the free publication to "blur boundaries and encourage the viewer to participate in a visual dialogue with the works," in its own words. Toward that end, the Kult ArtCade is a roaming, vintage arcade machine that serves as a 3D version of the magazine. Instead of a traditional control panel, the ArtCade features a selection of art, illustration, photography and personal vignettes on the magazine's current theme.

Indeed, if magazines can be published on bottles or reconceptualized as objets d'art, why not a vintage arcade machine, which stands just as much chance of surprising and delighting consumers while the publishing industry recrafts itself? One to be inspired by! (Related: Smoking is bad, art is good.)

Europcar is teaming up with Nissan to offer electric vehicles for hire. Low emission rental vehicles are nothing new for Europcar (or many other rental agencies, for that matter); models such as the Toyota Prius have been part of its 225,000 strong fleet for years. However, it seems to be the first time that a rental company and car manufacturer are jointly offering a design that's not just low emission, but no emission.

After introducing electric versions of existing models, Nissan plans to develop entirely new models that will be made available through Europcar. The company hopes to offer a wide range of zero-emission vehicles at all the usual rental locations like airports, train stations and local kiosks by the end of 2010. Besides helping Europcar stand apart from other rental companies and providing Nissan with a guaranteed market for a large number of electric vehicles, the alliance will give consumers the opportunity to try out an unfamiliar product in a real-world setting. Mobile app for optimal restroom breaks during movies

Original: Mobile app for optimal restroom breaks during movies

Two years ago, we covered a few mobile services that help users find the nearest public restroom. Focusing instead on when to go, RunPee is a web-based service and soon-to-be mobile app that maps out loo-break moments for popular movies.

Users can choose from an extensive list of movies currently in theatres, and a few classics like Aliens and Star Wars. A time graph of the film indicates when it's safe to disappear for a minute or two. The website lists a cue line to listen for, and the approximate amount of time before something important happens. For those who want to find out what they missed, a box of scrambled text can be clicked on to reveal what was missed. The site will also note if there's a scene after the credits, so movie-goers don't run out of the cinema before the film is actually over.

Anyone can contribute suggested break times to the listed films, which as they say, makes RunPee a Wiki-pee-dia of sorts. (Sorry…) An iPhone application is currently awaiting approval from Apple, meaning weak-bladdered users will soon be able to check in from the theatre. Which is, of course, where the concept shines. One for drinks manufacturers to sponsor, encouraging sales of 48-ounce colas?

iPhone game gets kids into the (hidden) park

Original: iPhone game gets kids into the (hidden) park

Regular Springwise readers may remember LocoMatrix, the location-based game we covered last year that kids play outside using GPS-enabled cell phones. Along similar lines, a new iPhone-specific counterpart aims to take kids on an eco-minded adventure through the park.

Released early this month by Australian developer Bulpadok, The Hidden Park is a computer game for young families that makes the most of the iPhone's features as it leads children into a fantasy world of trolls, fairies and genies. Families begin by downloading the app from Apple's App Store for USD 6.99 and then heading to a nearby park—currently, the game supports a select group of parks in nine major cities around the world, including New York, London, Tokyo and Sydney. From there, children navigate their way through the real park by following a magical map that reveals where mystical creatures live. As kids move past landmarks in the park, the map tells them where to go next, with puzzles and riddles to solve in order to save the park from greedy developers. Children also take photos of various landmarks—and of the magical creatures who are said to live nearby—and can store those photos in a galler

Taking full advantage of Apple's technology, the Hidden Park uses the iPhone's A-GPS feature to accurately pinpoint each player's movements within the park and plot them against the interactive map that forms the heart of the game, for example. Through Location Based Services (LBS) technology, the game triggers particular animations and tasks as the user reaches key points along their journey. The phone's accelerometer, meanwhile, allows users to shake the device to scatter mystical characters over any photographed image. The Hidden Park was created in collaboration with WSP Environmental. And while the game is currently focused on a set of key major parks, it can be adapted to others—in fact, the company is now working on a park builder that will allow parents to set up the game in their local park and share it with other parents. In the meantime, Bulpadok is also accepting nominations for additional parks to support in the game.

As developed nations around the globe fight childhood obesity, there's no doubt games like this will be welcomed with open arms; improving mobile technologies, meanwhile, are making more and more possible. How could *you* put the iPhone to work to slim down and entertain the world's kids...? (Related: Gyms for kids use gaming to keep them hooked.)

Be More Financially Savvy

Most people often times do not like to discuss their finances, especially if they are not doing very well at the moment. It’s because most people actually don’t know how to handle their finances correctly which is what gets them into trouble, and more over, they sure don’t want to be scolded on their mistakes. Below are a few suggestions on being more financially savvy in the future, recently located on ArtBizBlog.

Do not ever just rely on your spouse to handle all of the financial matters. This is a big no no, what if something happens to that spouse, what will you do? YOU need to know everything there is to know regarding your finances no matter who writes out the bills in the end.

Keep up with your accounting every week. Often times people try to put it off and do it just once a month and this often times get them into trouble as there are lost receipts, forgotten expenses and more.

Do most of your banking online. One of the biggest pains every week for people is being able to get to the bank before it closes. If you have direct deposit that definitely helps, whats even more helpful is banking online. You can check your balance, print out statements, switch money between accounts, pay bills online and more.

Important Steps To Take Before Starting A Business

Original: Important Steps To Take Before Starting A Business

Steps and Shadows
Creative Commons License photo credit: Lincolnian (Brian)

In the world today with all of our new technology rising every day and so many different opportunities, one could start just about any business you could think of. However, There are a few vital steps to take before starting any sort of business today as suggested on Entrepreneur.com.

Show the money. Obviously you cant start a new business without the proper capital, so be sure that you examine what you have to work with and where you will need to borrow before starting. Go out and get yourself a good attorney. This doesnt mean they have to be at your beck and call, but it’s good to have an attorney on staff that is experienced in new business to help you get started.

Decide on what you are going to call your business. This probably sounds like a very easy task, but it’s really not. Make sure the name you choose you will like for the duration of your company.

Get all necessary licenses and permits: Along with a business license, you may need to get additional licenses depending on the type of business and local laws. Many professionals, such as contractors and real estate agents, need to be licensed in the states in which they work.

Fast food chain goes local

Original: Fast food chain goes local

Fast food restaurants have long been domains of guilty indulgence, something that Burgerville is set to change. Although it's been around in the Pacific Northwest since the 1960s, Burgerville is committed to supplying its patrons with local, seasonal and organic food options.

Beef and cheese are purchased from hormone-free farms in Oregon, and all of Burgerville's produce is locally sourced—meaning customers won't find a strawberry shake in December. They will, however, find sweet potato fries and pumpkin shakes in autumn and Walla Walla onion rings in the summer. In addition to its focus on sustainable ingredients, Burgerville runs its 39 restaurants as greenly as possible. Its canola oil is recycled into biodiesel fuel after its cooking life has ended, it has a wind-generated electricity investment programme, and there is a staff-initiated composting and recycling scheme. Food is priced marginally above other chains (for instance, a Yukon & White Bean Burger costs USD 5.29 and rosemary shoestring potatoes USD 2.99), but can be justified by the extra effort involved.

Although Burgerville certainly isn't the only fast food joint to source locally and act sustainably, it's one of the biggest chains that have gone that direction. If fast food chains, so recently the antithesis of all that's eco-friendly, healthy and democratic, can do a 180 with their business—can't anyone? (Related: Meatless fastfood chains.)

Don't Worry, Be Mappy

Control. Don't let your controlling nature get in the way of growing your business. Delegate work to others and let them make decisions. Let go.

Mellow Business recently posted an article on numerous things internet business related that a lot of people stress over when there’s really no cause to do so. After reading this article a lot of them really made sense as to why they just shouldn’t matter or at least not as much as people make them matter. Why drive ourselves crazy over the little unimportant thing’s when we should concentrate on the big important thing’s?

Here is a short list of some of the thing’s that you really ought to just let go of.

  • Making everything business-like. Some online applications and tools can be used for just fun, there are other uses of the internet than just business.
  • Perfection. This is a big one, no one and nothing is perfect, so stop driving yourself crazy trying to be because you will never get there.
  • What could happen. Why care about what may or may not happen, worry about what is happening right now.
  • Sucking the profit dry. Just because you could charge more for a service or product doesn’t always mean you should, think about the customers and their needs and experience with you before you change prices.

Business owners all over the world are constantly wracking their brains trying to figure out what their consumers actually want and need. They take into consideration all types of different products, features, applications, services and more trying to see what will sell more to their target audience. Below are the top thing’s that consumers actually buy which are not products persay.

  • A product or service that will make them more money in the long run.
  • Something that will really save them time during their busy schedules.
  • Something that keeps them from frustration in doing things that they don’t like to do such as wasting time and money, as listed on Duct Tape Marketing.
  • Products or services that will help them save money not just for today but in their future as well.
  • And probably the most important thing for sale is anything that will make them feel better about themselves!

I am saying that at some point this is how a decision about you, your products and solutions will be made, so you must answer one or all of these questions along the path to yes.

Tim Berry recently participated in a student interview asking him about his and his wifes success in business, their secrets and the lessons that they learned throughout their 22 year’s of experience in bootstrapping. Although he felt that his answers were not as good as they could have been, he does have a few lessons learned from bootstrapping which are listed below.

  •        They built their business around themselves. Their business reflects who they are and the things they like to do, which every business should reflect it’s owners.
  •        They offered something that the public wanted. This is a big contributor to the level of success that your business will have, depending on the need and want of your product or service.
  •        They used their own money rather than spending money that they didn’t already have such as obtaining loans, or borrowing from friends and family.
  • We hired people slowly and carefully. We did everything ourselves in the beginning, then hired people to take tasks off of our plate. We hired a bookkeeper who gave us back the time we spent bookkeeping. A technical support person gave us back the time we spent on the phone explaining software products to customers.

How To Make Conferences Better

In business large or small, we all have conferences or meetings of some sort with everyone who is on staff. These conferences and meetings are a way to keep everyone up to date in one shot as well as get new ideas, brainstorm and more. So how do we make our conferences the best experience possible? Below are a few tips on making your business conferences and meetings better recently posted on Harvard Business.

Your conference and meeting should tell the employees a unique story. Conferences generally are a long drawn out lengthy and uncomfortable time for anyone who attends. Make your conference tell a story to the people, provide spots throughout the speaking that enable excitement and some calmer moments as well that go from start to finish in a smooth manner.

Conferences should be about more than just eating and sitting. We live more and more of our lives in the splendid isolation of the Internet, with all the faux connectors like Facebook, Twitter, email, and the rest. Getting together is an increasingly rare and important privilege. Meetings and conferences should be constructed to take advantage of the gathered group. Every meeting or conference should use the power of the group to give something back to the community in which the meeting is held.

What are your ideas on making conferences and meetings better?

Are you doing all you can to turn potential customers into buyers? Here are three simple strategies that will go a long way toward making sure that your shoppers' dollars are flowing into your registers.

Boost your sales by supporting some commercial customers. When you help them increase their business, this will in turn end up increasing your own business as well.

Try cutting down on packaging so that your customers don’t go into shock when they get to the register. Try to downsize the way some items are packaged so that it brings the total cost of that item for the customer down even if it’s just a little bit.

Biz Unite suggests making it much easier for your customers to pay you for your products and services. Offer several payments options such as paying online, pay by phone, electronic check, money orders and more. The easier and more convenient it is for them to pay you, the more apt they are to shop at your business.

Building a company with staying power was important to Ericson, so he and his co-founders, James Perkins, 25, and Jason Meinzer, 26, opted to incorporate CityRyde as a for-profit entity when it launched in 2007. "You have to make green to go green," Ericson says. "We knew we needed to have a model that allowed us to sustain the business while still helping us save the environment." After a year of planning and development, Philadelphia-based CityRyde has positioned itself as an authoritative bike-sharing consulting firm, offering services to companies across the U.S. and projecting sales of $1.1 million this year.
