Green car-sharing by the hour at Hawaii hotels

Original: Green car-sharing by the hour at Hawaii hotels

Hotels and car-sharing are a natural fit, as we've already seen in Zipcar's partnership with AKA. Whereas Zipcar's effort targets extended-stay residents, however, GreenCar Hawaii aims to give hotel guests of all kinds an alternative to traditional rental cars when they visit the Aloha State.

Rather than scrambling to arrange and pick up a rental car at the airport, customers of GreenCar Hawaii simply take a taxi to their hotel. Later, when they need a car, they can easily reserve one of the company's hybrid electric Ford Escape SUVs. Reservations can be made online, by phone or at the hotel kiosk, which then gives customers a voucher; that, in turn, is shown to the hotel valet, who brings a car right to the consumer, complete with a complimentary gas card. Pricing on GreenCar Hawaii's hybrid vehicles is USD 15 per hour, including mileage, free gas and roadside assistance. Alternatively, consumers can rent them for a full 24 hours for USD 115. Currently, GreenCar Hawaii is available at the Grand Hyatt Kauai.

There seems to be little doubt that car-sharing is taking hold around the globe — including the peer-to-peer versions we've recently seen — so using the concept to relieve hotel guests of the burden of a full-time rental car makes good sense. Who will bring similar benefits to transumers at the hotels in your part of the world...? More near-instant e-commerce delivery

Original: More near-instant e-commerce delivery

It's been a few years since we wrote about quick-delivery e-commerce companies MaxDelivery, Lickety Ship and Zifty, but recently we came across a new contender in the field. Launched last December, London-based Shutl also gives online shoppers a way to get their goods delivered almost immediately.

Users of Shutl can choose to receive their order within 90 minutes of purchase, or they can select a one-hour delivery window at any point in the future, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Shutl integrates directly into the ordering systems of its retail partners—which currently include Argos, Start London and Laithwaites Wine—and shows up simply as a branded delivery option. When customers opt to use Shutl, it sends a courier to collect their purchases from the store and then delivers it within the chosen timeframe; customers can even track their deliveries in real time on a GPS-enabled map. Pricing for Shutl delivery starts at GBP 4.95.

Since its launch, Shutl has focused on the London area, but it plans to roll out across the rest of the UK in the coming months, with international expansion after that. The Million-Dollar Idea in Everyone: Easy New Ways to Make Money from Your Interests, Insights, and Inventions

Rather than list all the products we've seen offered in customized form over the years, it's getting to the point now where we might be better off listing the ones we *haven't* seen served up in personalized versions. One example? Beef jerky — until recently, that is. New Jersey-based Slant Shack Jerky is a small, artisan company that hand-crafts beef jerky to suit each individual consumer's tastes.

Available in quantities of a quarter pound, half pound or a full pound even, Slant Shack's jerky offers customers numerous choices. First, for example, is whether to use traditional USDA choice or organic grass-fed beef, which adds an extra charge. Next, buyers must decide whether they'd prefer an original or a "hot & smoky" marinade. From there, it's the rub that must be selected, with four tantalizing options or—alternatively—the "naked" approach. Last but not least, consumers can choose a brown sugar or spicy pepper glaze, or none at all. For those having trouble deciding, there's also an assortment of chef's choices to choose among. Pricing starts at USD 10 per quarter pound. The customization trend is still going strong! (Related: Design your own pet foodwww.slantshackjerky.com

One-third of the world's population today has no access to any form of modern energy, relying instead on highly polluting fuels like wood and kerosene. Susan Gregg was 17 and heading off to Carnegie Mellon University, and she had a problem: a closet overstuffed with one-of-a-kind vintage shoes and dresses. The solution? Open an online boutique.

ModCloth.com was headquartered in her dorm room and run with the help of her high school sweetheart, Eric Koger. The two drove from Pittsburg visitors every month and is on track to surpass $50 million in sales this year. They've raised $20 million in new funding to open up offices in San Francisco and Los Angeles this summer, and employee numbers are close to 150, and rising.

Gregg-Koger says ModCloth's biggest advantage is the fact that she is ModCloth's ideal customer: "Other companies might say, 'We need to get on this social networking stuff,' whereas it was intuitive for us. If I have a Facebook account, and my friends do, my business should."

ModCloth's future is "social commerce," she adds. That is, in developing a site that involves customers even if they're not actually buying. ModCloth recently introduced a "Be the Buyer" program, which lets customers choose which styles go into production, and a "Name It and Win It" contest. The idea is to leverage crowdsourcing and encourage customers to share and comment--and get excited about clothes that will be available in a few months.< qid%3D1248519584%26sr%3D1-3&

Frito-Lay shows consumers where their chips came from

Original: Frito-Lay shows consumers where their chips came from

There's nothing like the conversion of a big brand to prove that a trend has taken hold. Case in point: Frito-Lay, which apparently aims to boost its chips' (still) made here appeal with an online Chip Tracker that lets customers see where their snacks originated.

"Lay's chips are made from potatoes grown by farmers across America," the brand explains. More than 80 farms from 27 states across the country, in fact, grow the potatoes that become Lay's potato chips. With that idea in mind, Frito-Lay last year launched a campaign featuring the farmers that grow them. The "Lay's Mobile Farm" Tour — which wraps up this week — has been part of that effort, as is the Chip Tracker, which lets consumers trace where a particular bag of chips was made. All they need do is enter their ZIP code along with the first three digits of the bag's product code; in return, the site gives them the specific location along with its annual output. An associated map, meanwhile, highlights both growing and production facilities.

Frito-Lay's comprehensive marketing effort to celebrate the brand's many local connections has also included on-pack messaging, local event sponsorships and 24,000 in-store displays customized for each participating state. How's the (still) made here message shaping up at *your* local brand... ? (Related: Local wines, professionally made from amateurs' grapesA status story for spinachCoffee life stories.)

In tourism areas, a fixed camera mount for group photos

Original: In tourism areas, a fixed camera mount for group photos

Digital photography may have advanced considerably in recent years, but the fact remains that most group photos still lack the person holding the camera. Enter the fotopol, a camera mount for tourist spots that lets visitors get everyone in the picture.

Australian fotopol sells two models of its camera mounts. The fotopol stand (USD 2,350) is a permanently fixed, freestanding camera mount that's made from anodized aluminum with a galvanized steel base and stainless steel hardware; six colour options are available, as are etched and screen-printed designs. Local information and advertising can be displayed on the front panel as well. The fotopol balcony series, on the other hand, targets cruise ships and hotels with a permanent camera mount that gets attached either inside or outside the door frame of the balcony. Using the mount, passengers and guests can secure their camera, compose the shot, set the time delay and capture a memorable group photo. The balcony series comes in white; custom branding is available. Fotopol is also working on an interface that can make the balcony camera mount a rental option for passengers and visitors.

Necessity is the mother of invention, as they say. Time to start scratching this particular itch for visitors to your own tourist attraction or hospitality locale? Alternatively, for photography and other consumer brands, time to investigate the advertising and sponsorship possibilities?

Café creates NGO to ensure fair trade with coffee farmers

Original: Café creates NGO to ensure fair trade with coffee farmers

Fair trade coffee is no longer uncommon; what's unusual about Canadian AGRO Café is that it went so far as to create its own NGO arm to make sure it serves only coffee that's ethically and environmentally sound.

With two Vancouver, British Columbia, locations, AGRO Café sources its coffee direct from small-scale farmers in Kenya, Mexico, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Peru, Bolivia and Uganda through AGRODEV, its nonprofit NGO established specifically for that purpose. Through AGRODEV—short for Agricultural Growers Resource Organization Developing Economic Viability—the café encourages farmers to adopt ecologically sound methods, and supports them during the transition; it also ensures that they are paid fair wages. Samples of each crop are sent to the café for approval before harvesting; once they're picked, AGRO Café roasts the beans in-house so as to provide the shortest distance possible between producer and consumer.

Hand in hand with all the ethical and sustainability benefits of sourcing its coffee in this way, of course, are myriad storytelling possibilities on the consumer end, as we've already seen in the Crop to Cup effort we featured back in 2008. It sounds like AGRO does feature photos of its farmers on its café walls, but we'd expect to see it go even further to track and highlight the stories of the individual farmers behind each and every cup, bringing home for consumers in a vivid way its ethical and (still) made here underpinnings. Carvertising campaign rewards drivers with gas

Original: Carvertising campaign rewards drivers with gas

Sellsumers can already earn cash in exchange for wrapping their cars in ads via sites like Australian cashURwheels, but recently we came across an example in Singapore that offers a slightly different twist. Through a new carvertising campaign from local shopping magazine Chic and Chevron's Caltex gas brand, Singapore drivers can earn SGD 50 worth of gas.

Consumers begin by registering their car with the GottaGetGas site, including license plate, model, colour and type of gas used. If selected, they're then invited to get an advertiser-provided decal affixed to their car at the nearest Caltex station. In exchange, they're rewarded with a SGD 50 GottaGetGas card, which can be used to buy gas at any Singapore Caltex station.

Consumers are clearly motivated by cash, but a brand-sponsored reward like gas could be just as compelling while providing benefits for yet another partner in the equation. For the magazine, meanwhile, it's a nice way to connect with readers while expanding advertisers' options. A model to emulate on the roads near you...?

Chicken-sitting service for (sub)urban flocks

Driven by the local food movement and the prospect of fresh eggs, more urban and suburban households are taking up small-scale backyard chicken farming. Tapping into that trend, Just Us Hens is a new Portland-based venture dedicated to tending local hens when their owners go away on holidays.

Launched in May, Just Us Hens' chicken-sitting service includes twice daily visits to let the birds out and in, replenish their food and water and hose them down when the weather gets hot. In addition to their USD 15 per visit chicken-sitting, Just Us Hens also offers wing clipping and beak trimming for USD 25, and chicken farming consultations for beginners at USD 50 per hour.

With around 65 percent of major US cities allowing residents to maintain small flocks of chickens in their backyards, perhaps there is a demand for expert chicken-sitting services in other poultry-permissive areas? Brand-sponsored being space for creative professionals

Original: Brand-sponsored being space for creative professionals

We've covered plenty of being spaces over the years, including several that target mobile warriors and nontraditional workers with a place to get something done. It wasn't until recently, however, that we came across a brand-sponsored version designed specifically for a particular category of professionals.

Launched late last month, Wix Lounge is a being space for creative professionals that's equipped with workstations, wifi, comfy seating, cappuccinos and plenty of opportunities for working, networking and collaboration. The Manhattan lounge was designed and conceived by Wix, maker of a popular Flash website building tool, and there's no cost for freelance designers and other creatives to spend time there. The Wix Lounge will also host events including web design workshops, business boot camps and movie nights, the company says.

Serving as a sort of B2B brand butler, the Wix Lounge is sure to win the hearts, wallets and loyalty of more than a few potential clients—far more effectively, we'd suggest, than any ad ever could. Other B2Bs the world over: how about setting up and hosting a little work nest for your own hard-working clients...?
